CHAPTER SIX

CASE was the first person she saw when she came down to breakfast the next morning. He was with a middle-aged couple Lucy vaguely recalled having seen at the dinner dance. As Case beckoned her over she found herself trying not to blush, her hands clammy.

‘Join us, Lucy.’ Rising, Case introduced the other couple as Marge and Larry Chambers. Larry, it seemed, was a paper merchant from Sydney. ‘Lucy flew up from Melbourne to visit her mother,’ Case told them easily, making no mention of the fact that her mother had gone away. ‘She’s grabbed the chance to catch up with some of her Maxi Board friends.’

Friends, plural, Lucy noted. Making it clear that she wasn’t here alone with him! Protecting her reputation again. Or his. Or was he thinking of David, who worked for him?

The Sydney couple were already on their coffee and about to leave. ‘Nice to have met you, Lucy,’ they said as they excused themselves. ‘Have a good day. You too, Case.’

Lucy, left alone with Case, found herself trembling like a nervous schoolgirl. Annoyed with herself, she bent her head over her bowl of muesli, gripping her spoon like a lifeline.

‘Your hair’s wet,’ Case commented. ‘Been swimming already?’

She glanced up. ‘Only in the hotel pool. A few laps before breakfast.’ She went on hastily, not wanting him to get the idea that she expected anything more of him, ‘I’m going to take a bus trip to Seaworld later this morning, after a sunbake and a dip in the surf.’

‘Forget the bus.’ Case was dismissive. ‘I’ll drive you there. I still have the hire car.’

She drew in a quick breath, her heart missing a beat. ‘You’re saying—you want to go to Seaworld?’ She slanted a look at him, her eyes sceptical.

‘Why not? Performing dolphins. Death-defying roller-coaster rides. Sounds fun. I haven’t had much clean, wholesome fun lately, I’m beginning to realise.’

No…Your type of fun would be more sophisticated, Lucy reflected with an ironic smile. Beautiful women, glamorous first nights, first-class travel…that kind of thing. Simple pursuits like body-surfing, brisk bush walks and performing dolphins might seem like a refreshing change for an enforced rest weekend. But it’ll be a flash in the pan, I’ll bet. Like I’ll be a flash in the pan too. You’ll be glad to get back to your pampered, high-powered world. And to your glitzy bimbos, with their more sophisticated demands.

‘Mind if I share the joke?’ Case asked, catching the smile on her lips.

She gave a quick laugh and shook her head. ‘I think you’d rather not know,’ she said.

‘Oh?’ His eyes taunted her. ‘You think performing dolphins are not my cup of tea…is that it?’

‘Close,’ she admitted. Performing females would be more his style.

‘Then I’ll prove you wrong. I will enjoy it. I’m already enjoying this weekend enormously. Thanks to you. You’re helping me to loosen up, have a bit of fun…something I haven’t been doing enough of lately. It’s doing wonders for me.’ His dark gaze caught hers, something in the compelling depths shaking her to the core.
